Kotitehtävät ja työhakemukset tekoälyn kirjoittamina? ChatGPT:n avaama tulevaisuus innostaa ja mietityttää
OpenAI -yrityksen ChatGPT -tekoälymalli on ollut uutisissa viimeisen viikon aikana ja hämmästyttää kapasiteetillaan. Mallin kyvykkyydet suomen kielellä ovat vielä rajatut mutta englanninkielinen versio kykenee monenlaisiin tehtävänantoihin. The Atlantic pohtii jo korkeakoulujen kirjallisten töiden kuolemaa . Itsekin olen skeptinen erilaisten arvioitavien esseemuotoisten kotitehtävänantojen tulevaisuudesta. Jo parikymmentä vuotta yritteliäimmät, laiskimmat tai epätoivoisimmat ovat pyrkineet oikaisemaan kopioinneilla ja leikkaa-liimaa -tuotoksilla, nyt tekoäly uhkaa tehdä Turnitinin kaltaisista plagiointitarkastusohjelmista pitkälti hyödyttömiä.
Toki opettajat eivät anna kotitehtäviä kiusakseen vaan tarkoituksenaan kehittää opiskelevien tietoja ja taitoja. Lukioissa arviointiin tekoälyohjelmat eivät sinänsä lyhyellä tähtäimellä juuri vaikuta. Suomalaiset ylioppilaskokeet ja myös useimmat kurssien (modulien) arvioitavat suoritukset tehdään Abitti-järjestelmässä suljetussa verkossa jossa ei voi käyttää internetin tiedonhakumahdollisuuksia. Mutta toisen asteen koulutuksen tarkoitus ei ole toki vain laittaa valmistuneita jonoon. Pitkän tähtäimen kysymys on, muuttuuko tekstin tuottaminen suuntaan jossa pikemmin ohjastamme tekoälyä kuin tuotamme tekstiä itse ja miten tähän pitäisi reagoida? Kysymys kuuluu pikemmin, miten tekoälyä voisi käyttää hyödyksi kirjoitustyössä? En tiedä, kysyn.
Lyhyellä tähtäimellä pohdin opinto-ohjaajana eri maiden korkeakouluhakuprosesseja. Englanniksi ChatGPT kykenee mainiosti kirjoittamaan kelvollisia hakemus- ja suosituskirjeitä. Ottaen huomioon kyseisten asiakirjojen merkityksen esimerkiksi Iso-Britannian korkeakouluihin hakeutumisessa ovat valintalautakunnat vaikean tehtävän edessä. Esimerkkejä voi kuka tahansa luoda ohjelman kautta, käyn läpi englanninkielisen kotitehtävän ja työhakemuskirjeen. Laitan muutaman lisäesimerkin kommentteihin sekä Google-käännökset-ensimmäisestä jotta blogista ei tulisi turhan pitkä.
Toisaalta käyn kuntosalilla vaikka voisin käyttää nosturia. Opiskelen ranskaa vaikka Google Translate vastaa arjen tarpeisiini hyvin. Nautin ruoanlaitosta vaikka voisin ostaa valmisruokaa. On myös syytä tuoda esille etteivät nämä keinotekoisesti luodut esseet ole erityisen korkealaatuisia ja sisältävät usein karkeita virheitä. Mutta niin toki sisältävät ihmisopiskelijoidenkin. Suuri osa ihmisille merkittävistä teksteistä ei suinkaan ole pohdiskelevia esseitä vaan vaikkapa markkinointiviestejä, treffipalvelun profiilikuvauksia, vänkäyksiä sosiaalisessa mediassa ym.
On selvää, että teknologia tulee kehittymään eikä jää paikoilleen eikä suinkaan pakita. Muistamme millainen vitsi automaattikäännökset olivat kymmenen vuotta sitten, nyt ne kääntävät etenkin maailmankielten välillä erittäin sujuvasti. Toisaalta, maailman mahtavat ovat käyttäneet puheenkirjoittajia ja sihteerejä vuosisatoja. Nyt tämä mahdollisuus avautuu nopeasti lähes koko ihmiskunnalle. Laiskoille, ahkerille, aktivisteille, disinformaation levittäjille. Tekoälyä voi käyttää sparrajaana, innostajana, satunnaisideageneraattorina. Olemme joka tapauksessa uuden edessä.
OpenAI:ta kokeilemaan pääsee rekisteröitymällä käyttäjäksi Google-tunnusten avulla. Suosittelen kokeilemaan. Suomeksi tuotokset ovat sangen kömpelöjä, mutta Google Translaten avullakin suomi-englanti-suomi -tuotokset ovat huomattavasti sujuvampia. OpenAI:n kautta pääsee myös DALL-E -kuvatuotosympäristöön josta alla esimerkki.

Käytän esimerkkinä tehtävänantoa “Analysoi yhteiskuntaluokan merkitystä Jane Austenin teoksessa Ylpeys ja Ennakkoluulo” ja pyydän vastauksen neljän säkeistön rap-lauluna. Laulun tekeminen osoittaa että ohjelmasta löytyy luovuutta, miten sen nyt määrittelemmekin. Kahteen tapaan kirjoitettu essee löytyy kommenttikentästä.

Niin. Kirjapainotaito taisi kuitenkin mahdollistaa massoille pääsyn kirjoitetun sanan pariin ja sitä kautta mahdollisuuden laajentaa omaa ajattelua ja maailmankuvaa. Tässä olet hehkuttamassa sitä, että kone ajattelee ihmisen puolesta.
Lähinnä luonnollinen jatkumo sille, että jo nykyisellään oman ajattelun ja luovuuden kehittämisen sijaan suuri osa ihmiskunnasta laiduntaa itseään älykkäämpien valmiiksi pureskelemaa some-sisältöä ruudulta tuijottaen.

Faktahan on että valtaosa ihmiskunnasta laiduntaa joka tapauksessa tyytyväisenä tuleepa totuus Baalin ylipapilta, Kekkoselta tai Kim Kardashianilta. En näkisi tässä suurenmoista muutosta. Työkalujahan nuo ovat, aivan kuin auto, kirjoituskone tms.

Onhan näitä puppugeneraattoreita ollut vuosikausia. Niillä on jopa kirjoitettu vertaisarvioinnin läpäisseitä ”tieteellisiä” artikkeleita. Tunnettuhan on Sokalin tapaus https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Sokal . Matemaattisten puppuartikkeleiden kirjoittamiseen löytyy runsaasti välineitä. Samoin poliittisen jargonin tuottamiseen.

Minulla ei ole kykyjä arvioida millä tavoin ChatGPT olisi edistysaskel useisiin aikaisempiin malleihin verrattuna. Joka tapauksessa se on äärettömän helppokäyttöinen ja monipuolinen, kuin menisi selaimella nettiin Gopherin sijaan.
Kannattaa koittaa itse erilaisilla vapailla tehtävänannoilla englanniksi. Tosin amerikkalainen kulttuurikonteksti auttaa.

Suhtautumisessa tähän projektiin ihmisten kannattaa olla varovainen, etteivät tule vähätelleeksä jatkuvassa kehityksessä olevaa asiaa. Tekoälyhän paranee entisestään kun ajan kuluessa sitä opettaessa.
Katsoin yhden youtube-videon tekoälystä, jota oli vuosia opetettu siinä miten se simuloi kävelyä pelimoottorissa. Aika hyvältä näytti. Ihmisten ongelma on siinä kun ne julistavat turhankin herkästi, ettei tästä ole yhtään mihinkään, vailla mitään järkeviä perusteita.

Testailin uusimman ylioppilaskokeen tehtäviin sillä niitä ei ole vielä tietokannassa (ChatGPT lopettaa vuoden 2021 loppuun). Koherenttia tekstiä tulee, tosin joskus järjetöntäkin vaan niin tulee opiskelijoiltakin. Suomen kieli on kuitenkin vielä merkittävästi kömpelömpää kuin englanti, mutta eihän tämä ikuisesti kestä.
